After June’s Sanctuary on God using our weaknesses, the verse from 2 Corinthians 12:9, just wouldn’t go away. But this time the emphasis was on a different part of the verse, on the words “My grace is sufficient for you.”
My Grace, God’s grace… is sufficient. It is enough. His grace is enough.
We can define grace as a sovereign gift from God [Ephesians 2:8-9], offering the undeserved favour and loving kindness of God towards humanity, offered freely through Jesus Christ. It is not dependent on what we do, but only on His love for us. We no longer have to strive for acceptance, because we already have it. Grace is a gift freely given by God.
The Greek work for grace, ‘charis’, is where we get the word charismatic from; Grace filled people. We are grace filled people.
So how does it work? When we offer grace to someone, we create space – space for God, space for redemption, for healing, for kindness. How we respond to others and their needs can either create a doorway for God to enter, or it could close that door. Grace is a way of behaving and doing things that offers unmerited kindness and forgiveness to others, not because they have earned it, but as a conscious choice to act with compassion and mercy, echoing Jesus’ example in extending God’s grace to us. It is about choosing empathy over judgment, letting go of resentment, and responding with patience and understanding rather than anger or bitterness.
Grace, however, isn’t confined to a simple definition. It’s something we feel. I personally am so grateful for the grace extended to me by others over the years; for their modelling of Christ’s love in my life.
