Christian joy is a deep, abiding confidence in God’s love and faithfulness that remains even in times of difficulty. It is grounded in Christ’s finished work, sustained by His presence, shared with His people, and strengthened by the hope of His return.
Through exploring communion, we see that it reveals that Christian joy is not the denial of suffering but the celebration of God’s redeeming presence in the midst of it. In sharing this meal together, we remember Christ’s sacrifice, receive the assurance of forgiveness, experience fellowship with God and one another, give thanks for God’s faithfulness, and anticipate the coming feast of God’s kingdom. Joy therefore flows not from favourable circumstances but from communion with the crucified and risen Christ.
In more detail, the Bible Project put it this way:
Take some time to reflect on the four key themes we drew out of communion through the lens of joy.
Remembered: Am I finding my deepest joy in what Christ has already done for me?
Received: Am I receiving the joy that Christ freely offers, or searching for it somewhere else?
Shared: Is my life bringing joy to the body of Christ, and am I allowing others to share that joy with me?
Anticipated: Does the hope of Christ’s return give me joy that rises above today’s circumstances?
If you want to take this further, attached below are the four reflections we had at each station on Sunday. Connect with a friend or your belonging group and choose to explore that theme together in sharing communion together (whether that is bread and wine, over a meal or simply coffee and a cake).
